Cybersecurity in logistics

If your logistics company isn't protected against cyber attacks, your business is at risk. One wrong move and all your data, shipments and reputation could be at risk. Outdated security systems, employee errors and weak defences can bring you big losses.

Do you know how to protect your company? It's time to figure it out before it's too late. The role of cybersecurity in logistics is the subject of a new blog post from LLC «SyncraNova».

Logistics is a tidbit for hackers
Every year, the number of cyber attacks on logistics companies increases. Hackers are after information related to shipments, customers and financial transactions. If attacked, data can be destroyed, frozen or stolen. Imagine your system stops working and you can't deliver an order. The situation would be critical for the business.

Major vulnerabilities in logistics:
  • Human Factor. Surprisingly, most cyberattacks are due to employee negligence. One click on a phishing email and the entire system can be compromised. It's important to train your staff and regularly remind them of security rules.
  • Outdated technology. Older security systems can't handle modern threats. Some companies, despite the high risks, continue to use outdated software, which opens up a wide range of opportunities for hackers.
How they attack:
  • Phishing and social engineering. Hackers use psychological manipulation to trick employees into stealing important data, such as passwords. They may send an email to an employee purportedly on your behalf asking them to perform an urgent action (such as transferring money or opening an attachment). When the employee clicks on the link or opens the file, the virus gains access to the system.
  • Software attacks. Viruses and malware can sneak in through software vulnerabilities and shut down your system, leaving you with the choice of paying a ransom or losing your data. Often these attacks occur through unapproved software updates or malicious email attachments. Once malicious code gets into a system, it can encrypt files, block access, or steal information.
How to protect yourself
If you want to protect your company from cyberattacks, take the following steps:
  • Encrypt your data. Make sure that all critical information is protected using up-to-date cryptographic methods. Even if someone gains access to your systems, they won't be able to use that data without a key.
  • Two-factor authentication (2FA). Set up two-factor authentication for access to critical systems. This will add an extra layer of protection and reduce the risks of hacking.
  • Update software. Don't leave old versions of software behind - update software to address vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit for attacks.
  • Monitor vulnerabilities. Conduct regular security audits and penetration testing to identify and fix weaknesses in your system.
  • Train employees. Provide training so employees understand the importance of cybersecurity and can recognise phishing attacks or other threats.

Logistics is an entire network that connects supplies, information, and money. If your security is lax, the consequences can be catastrophic. Reminder: cyberattacks are on the rise, which means your defences need to be top notch. Investing in cyber defence is not an expense, but an important investment in the security and resilience of your business. The earlier you take care of your defences, the less chance hackers have.
